Excel pre-2016 and Excel on Mac:
These versions of Excel don't support the UTF-8 encoding. You'll need to use another application to create a correct bulk import file.
Excel 2016 or newer:
Open your .xls or .xlsx file
Go to File > Save as and select This PC on the left
Enter a file name and choose CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited) from the file type dropdown
Save the file
NOTE: "CSV (Comma delimited)" is NOT the correct option - the correct option includes UTF-8. If you don't see the UTF-8 option, you need to use another program.
Apple Numbers:
Open your file in Numbers
Click File in the top-left corner of your screen
Select Export to -> CSV
Expand Advanced options and under Text Encoding select Unicode (UTF-8)
Click Next
Choose a name and location of the file, then click Export to save your file
TextEdit on Mac:
Open your .csv file in TextEdit
Select Format > Make Plain Text
Open File > Save
In the Plain Text Encoding dropdown, select Unicode (UTF-8)
Click Save
Notepad:
Open your CSV file in Notepad
Click File in the top-left corner of your screen
Click Save as
In the dialog which appears, select the following options:
In the "Save as type" drop-down, select All Files.
In the "Encoding" drop-down, select UTF-8.
Rename your file using the .csv extension (Example: locations.csv).
5. Click Save.
Google Drive:
Upload your .xls or .xlsx file to Google Drive (not a .csv file - at that point the special characters have already been lost)
Open the file on Google Drive
Select File -> Download as -> Comma-separated values (.csv, current sheet)
When you have your UTF-8 encoded file you can import it to the Progus Store Locator.
